Mirantis Openstack: Minimum Requirements for Basic Lab - for about $1500

Orignally, the goal was to get the cloud up and running with the minimal amount of hardware possible.  I was able to explore the details of using Fuel and getting my hardware to use PXE boot without the correct Router or even powerful machines.   There has come a point where I need to finally look longer term for the hardware.

Dell R610s  (8 core 32 Gig 4 NICS) are a bit more capable and also more expensive than machines satisfying the minimal requirements for Openstack, but i am realizing that the lower cost solutions are always forcing me make other customizations.

The Dell R610 is a 1U server that’s been pretty much designed for virtualization with the latest Xeon 55xx series CPUs, four onboard NICs, six local drive bays and up to 96GB of RAM.  (online review)

So its looking like the minimal realistic hardware for creating an Openstack Lab without having to do many customizations to hardware is:

1 - Cisco 2960 Router ( approx 75 on Ebay - make sure you get managed version 24 port TT )
4 - Dell R610 Virtualization Servers  ( approx 360 on Ebay - 32G 8 Core 4 NIC)
